As a founding member of Sparrow Music, Tim voluntarily serves wearing many different hats. His responsibilities include helping develop and shape the music program, marketing, and securing funds to help sustain the program. His young age hasn’t deterred him from taking on this role of leading this international ministry.
Tim’s love for music stemmed from listening to his father play Beethoven and Rachmaninoff on the piano late at night as a young boy. Fast forward to today, one would find him following his father’s footsteps sharing the joy of music to young ears inside the classroom.
As Tim continues to pursue a degree in jazz studies, he celebrates his eighth consecutive year as the trumpet instructor for the award-winning Alum Rock School District Jazz Band, in addition to teaching trumpet, drums, and piano privately and gigging whenever he can.
In his spare time, Tim is an avid hockey fan and bleeds teal for his favorite hockey team,
the San Jose Sharks.
Alex Bernardez is passionate about helping and supporting children’s causes in the Philippines. He is blessed to have been a part of Sparrow Music’s board of directors from the start. He believes that the organization is a great way to share the love of Jesus Christ to underprivileged urban children while developing life skills, especially in his home country of the Philippines.
Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, Alex migrated to the United States in 1992 with his family. Shortly after, he started to work in the printed circuit board industry in San Jose, California. While working, he attended Evergreen Valley College, and later earned his Bachelor’s degree in business administration and MBA from San Jose State University.
Alex currently serves as the secretary at Sparrow Music; he has also served as the treasurer for the organization. He also proudly serves as a deacon at Alum Rock Christian Church in San Jose, California. From 2004 to 2007, he served as the church treasurer. Dan lives in San Jose, California and is happily married with 3 children and one grandchild. Growing up in a large family with many siblings, he feels blessed to have had all the things he aspired to have. Dan first encountered Jesus at a very young age and has now been a Christian for over 45 years now. One of Dan’s favorite promises in teaching the youth of the world is, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Teaching is fundamental to grow, for this this is how God made us.
Dan feels being a board member is quite inspirational, much like the lyrics “It only takes a spark to get a fire going.” Dan hopes to be one of the sparks that bring children and their families to Sparrow Music, and ultimately to Christ. When Sister Sarah approached Dan to be part of Sparrow Music, it did not take him long to say “Yes!” because the ministry and core of Sparrow Music is teaching and mentoring of young people. To Dan, Sparrow Music is not just a wonderful expression of Faith in action, of works; but also of Love in action, by the leading of the Holy Spirit.
