I am a volunteer… These words mean a lot to me. It’s been 3 years since Sparrow Music came to Payatas and these words started to work in me. It isn’t easy; everyone who volunteers here will agree with that. There are innate things in me that need to be set aside. There are things here that I will be doing that I’ve never done before. However, each experience is an opportunity to learn, to run the race beyond the finish line.
In April, Sparrow Music recently hosted a Vacation Bible School [VBS] that saw over 200 children and youth from the Payatas community attend and participate. Keeping with the spirit of this year’s theme, Athletics, “Running the Race” was the core concept, as outlined in the book of Hebrews.
“And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1b
The children were not the only ones who answered the call to take what they learned at VBS into their own lives. I, too, took away from the Athletics-themed VBS and how it translates to my life and ministry each day as a faithful volunteer with Sparrow Music.
FOCUS. I am always reminded why God sent me to Sparrow Music—to volunteer. He sent me to listen to the kids, to shed tears when they cry and join in their happiness. Simply be with them.
DISCIPLINE. I’ve learned to have time management and to be organized. I’ve learned that it’s not good to spend all my time in one area. Volunteering at Sparrow Music has taught me to manage my matters.
ENDURANCE. With the kids, it’s tough sometimes. There are more than 50 students and you have to know each of their attitudes and their characters, it is far from easy! Sometimes their personalities clash. We must exercise patience and courage to deal with them. But the important thing is, to endure because sooner or later things will change. As Kuya Ferds [SMPI Executive Director Ferdinand Medina] is always telling, “Don’t not look at them as they are now but who they can be in next many years”.
TEAMWORK. Volunteering at Sparrow Music—anywhere, actually—cannot be done alone. I am blessed to serve God with beautiful people who all have hearts for Him. We are bonded by God’s love in Payatas.
CONFIDENCE. I, personally, am thankful to have seen how my fellow volunteers were before [Sparrow Music] and how they are now; very different people. I thank God for letting Sparrow Music mold us to what Christ wants for us. We are now able to face many people, mothers or fathers and professional people, even people we thought we could never go along with. I think it’s not just the confidence in ourselves, but confidence in God, indeed.
These are just five things among countless others that I’ve learned and am applying to my role as a volunteer at Sparrow Music. I know there is much more to learn, and am excited in the coming years. As long as we fight a good fight and keep the Faith in our God, we can run the race beyond the finish line.
To God be the Glory!
