MUSIC IS LOVE.
It is a universal language that we all speak; it transcends lingual, cultural, and geographical boundaries. It is all around us, and in all that we do; it does not discriminate based on age, race, or gender. Scientific research has proved a positive correlation between music and academic achievement. Participation in music stimulates brain activity, promoting healthier brain function, and improves spatial and temporal reasoning in young children. This is vital for long-term development, as the early stages of life account for the majority of brain growth a person will experience over the course of their lifetime.
The Filipino peoples’ love of all things musical runs deep within the culture, and is a strong source of nationalistic pride. Cultural emphasis on music within the Filipino culture is clearly evident in historic folk songs, regional dances that are as diverse and unique as they are vibrant, popularized song and dance competitions, and of course, karaoke. Even in the poorest of areas, from the dimly lit and overcrowded barrios in the city to the remote provinces in the mountains and countryside, joyful singing and music fill the air.
Music teaches self-discipline through the dedication and commitment required to practice, while it also encourages team work through participation in larger ensembles and musical groups. Playing music, as a soloist or as part of a larger ensemble, helps develop a firm grasp of mathematics to be able to implement divisions of note values and subdivisions of time, all of which must be done instantaneously inside the mind. Problem solving skills are frequently sharpened in music, in common situations where the player must solve problems and correct errors, sometimes very rapidly, as to execute a given technique properly, or to keep his or her playing in syncwith the rest of the ensemble. These skills are developed beyond talent, and can be transferred to any aspect of life.
Music speaks for us when words are not enough, giving anyone who is touched by music a means of self-expression. Above all else, music lends itself as a vessel for evangelism.
